The scariest stories and legends from 1,000 years of the capital’s history are brought to life in the London Dungeon’s immersive 360° sets. In this haunted house style South Bank attraction, visitors come face to face with the likes of Jack the Ripper, Guy Fawkes, Sweeney Todd, and other notorious individuals from the city’s most gruesome past. The dungeon was founded by Annabel Geddes in 1976 when it was originally a wax exhibition. It spent its first 39 years on Tooley Street before moving up the river to its current location near the London Eye to be grouped with other Merlin-owned attractions.
A walk-through experience, the London Dungeon features 20 professional actors dressed as sinister characters who tell gripping, gory stories in 19 interactive shows while special effects and details like darkness, rattling skeletons, dripping water, rats in cages, and terrible scents draw guests in to experience each spooky tale through all of the senses. Highlights include The Descent down the medieval lift to the year 1536, the Tyrant Boat Ride, a simulated 18th century trial presided over by a “mad” judge and the Drop Dead ride which will send screaming visitors plummeting to the gallows in a rush of adrenaline. At the end of the tour, guests can sit back in the Victorian pub and enjoy a Ripper’s Revenge cocktail or a selection of other refreshments.
The London Dungeon opens daily from 10am or 11am and closes at 4pm or 5pm depending on the day. Check the website calendar for up-to-date times when booking tickets. Tours last approximately 110 minutes. Standard adult tickets booked in advance cost £28. Discounts, flexibility and attraction add-ons are available. The minimum recommended age is 12 years.
